Possible raw water pump problem

I have a 2000 Sea Ray 270 Sundancer with a 7.4l Mercruiser/ Bravo 3. The boat has been out of the water for 2 years and I?m getting it ready to get wet again. I connected a hose to the outdrive and before starting it up checked to see if any water was coming from the center of the prop, none. I started it up thinking maybe the pump needed to be running to allow water movement, still nothing. Is this a problem with the raw water pump? The impellor on the raw water pump was replaced about 5 hours before it was stored. What should I check to troubleshoot this?

It is probably coming out the idle relief ports at the transom. Is there water coming out from the transom where the drive mounts to the boat? It is normal if so.

Re: Possible raw water pump problem

If the impeller has been sitting for 2 years, it should probably be changed anyway. Bravo impellers are not very robust and should be changed every 2 years even with normal usage. When sitting for a long period of time the rubber will take a "set" which will affect how well they pump.

Also, you should easily be able to tell if the impeller is sucking water from the outdrive. 1- most of the water your feeding it should go into the outdrive and 2- that water should be coming out where thumpar says in the previous post. If this isn't happening, shut the engine off and change the impeller before you do damage.

Agree with the others to replace the impeller after sitting. Maybe you didn't let it run long enough for it to show up, just guessing.

Did you see any water inside the boat after trying, (I hope not)?
Is there good water pressure at your muffs?
You should have seen a lot of water coming out around the muffs prior to start. Once started the water should decrease a bunch.
How long did you let it run to check for water coming out?

good idea on priming the system. you should see water coming out of the outdrive VERY quickly. worst possible scenerio ( at least on a Bravo 2) is the thru transom sleeve has crushed and restricted water flow to the point that it wont pick up water. Believe me , it happened on my 94 Rinken hull and engine has to be pulled to replace it .Something to look into to.

One other thing , make sure the Bravo 3 even has an impeller, my Bravo 2 does not

You have an impeller. It is just not in the drive like an Alpha. It is belt driven off the engine. All Bravos have that same setup.
