Jim,

Shipping them isn't too bad. The best way to ship on e is in an outboard shipping crate/box.

See if you can buy a box that a new engine came in from a local dealer.

Re: Possible selling my motor...

Mark42, glad I read your second post.....I already had my response to that advice and the way you suggested to list it, but you hit the nail on the head...these are the ones to stay away from and I hope everyone pays attention to that part. Good advice and an excellent set-up! :D
As to the value, I'd have to say 12-1400 now and maybe 15-1800 in 2-3 months...
jimd, if you list pick-up only, it will kill alot of bids but will save you alittle work, which may cost you a bit in max bid.
To crate one properly, it does take some effort and I don't feel it is wrong to charge a price to crate it..I've crated several, and I tell myself every time I'll never do it again, but I haven't followed suit with that either.
Sometimes it's best to specify the buyer arrange for shipment and most trucking firms will pick up where ever directed as long as you have the means to load it. Business to Business is the cheapest shipping there is, whoever takes care of the shipping, buyer or seller.

Re: Possible selling my motor...

Walleyehed,

Yeah, I should be more careful about making it clear when I'm writing "tongue in cheek".

I had looked at e-bay ads for months before deciding to buy from a rebuilder. Many read along the lines of what I posted above. They sounded like they were promising you everything, but guaranteeing nothing. I am very happy with my rebuilt. Buying sight unseen second hand can be risky. More risk than I wanted to take.

As far as the crating goes, my Evinrude came in a Honda steel crate. It had been used a few times before, judging from the weld marks on it. Looks like it was made from a giant erector set. I was able to fit it in the back of my wife's Mountaineer. The guys at the shipping depot (FedEx) brought it out with a forklift and then 3 guys helped stuff it in the back. If you bring it to a depot I'm sure they will handle the lifting for you.

I think it is common to pay the freight to the closest depot to the buyer. Then they go pick it up. For me, it was about 1/2 hr drive.

I would stop at a dealer and see if you can pick up a used crate for free, or a nominal charge. Would mail you mine, but it's already in the landfill.

Good luck!

Mark.

Mnemonic!

Dude! I don't believe you! Tell me this is not from your ad:
:p
"The motor RUNS LIKE A DREAM! You will definitly have years of good memories with this motor like I have."

Hmmm... Sounds slightly familiar.... :D :D :D

BTW the motor looks great!

Good luck

Mark

Mark42 - Well, its a good line! Plus its true... I am only 25 years old, I did grow up with that boat over lots of summers with my grandfather who has passed away, and i did inherit the boat..

No lies.. I remember one time he was pulling my mother waterskiing in it and he forgot to lift the rear anchor... My mother was dodging that thing like she was playing dodgeball... good memory, huh?

I am getting alot of responses asking what the length of the shaft it... i measures from the bottom of the powerhead to the prop and i got 30"... Is that the right way to measure?

Re: Possible selling my motor...

children, children , children.... dont make me seperate you.

ok, i dont wanna come off as being cocky, but i do know a thing or two about selling on ebay, thats what i do for a living, i sell outboards and outboard parts, go check out my feedback and about me page if you dare.

first, jim, before you sell that beast, please email me as i am VERY local to you: phatmanmike@yahoo.com

second, when you ship large beasts like that thing youve got there, or any other large item you maye not need any more get a pallet, strap item to pallet, bring pallet and some money to your nearest forwardair shipping dock or go to www.forwardair.com
i shipped a 115 merc inline 6 from florida to utah for only 310.00, beat that.

third, if you ship smaller motors like 5, 10 or 15hp, dont use the stupid UPS shipping calculator that comes with ebay, they are such a rip off, why the heck else do you think UPS stocks went down a record 6$ in one day! sheesh!!! ship them via fedex . fedex is kicking ups' azz sooo much with their lower prices, i just shipped a 2 cylinder johnson 6 hp from florida to washington state for only 26 dollars! beat that one, if you can!

fourth, when you place the ad on ebay, be truthfull. it sells far better than tryiing to build it up. serious buyers can tell when yur pulling their leg. go to ebay and search for user name "myoutboards" and read my feedbacks and look at some of the motors ive sold and read the descriptions. i always take numerous photos and when ever i can, i even include a short 30 second video of the motor starting, running, shifting and pumping water. or if this is not feasable, i take photos of the motor running/pumping water.

but be honest. it works far more often than trying to scam somebody out of their hard earned money just to get rid of some problem motor you didnt feel like finishing yourself.

any questions, email me directly.

out

mike
