So I recently bought a boat, found out it had a 7hp motor on it and i ran it. it ran very well however recently it would run for about a minute then just kind of choke its self out...? it has new gas which i know thats not the problem but im afraid i made a horrible mistake.. i used normal 2 cycle oil mix (kind used in chain saws/ weed eaters blowes..etc) in it thinking all 2 cycle motor oil is the same.. well come to find out i needed twc-3 instead of the stuff i was putting in it. I have ran about a tank (1 gal) though it with no problems but then it started doing it. so what could it be?

any and all help is appreciated thank you so much.

(and after you provide some help feel free to make fun of me :D:cool: )

Well...it's certainly not as dumb as running a 2-stoke with NO oil at all:p

Not the stupidest question by a longshot;)

Re: Possibly the stupidest question ever asked

Sounds like a carb problem maybe, one tank with a similar oil shouldn't be too devastating on the motor.

I am no expert, what brand is the motor? Someone with more knowledge will be able to help and have better advice hopefully.

your oil probably didn't hurt anything unless you used the wrong mix ratio, but you do need to post make and model no. and you will get much better info on your outboard

I doubt the oil is a problem at all, but sounds like a fuel delivery issue, like a closed fuel tank vent, plugged fuel line, fuel filter, fuel pump, etc. Check it out real good and you should be fine, and let us know what you find!

Re: Possibly the stupidest question ever asked

I prefer the TCW3 rated oil and My TCW3 oil suggests use in any 2 stroke.
Including snowmobiles, chain saws and weed eaters etc.How ever fear not if you ran 2 stroke oil. There are some that say use only 2 stroke chain saw oil.
My 6 aftermarket service manuals all suggest "quality outboard 2 stroke oil:

Anything BUT the oil! Good grades of oil for air-cooled motors should be able to tolerate more extreme operating temperature variations and pressures BETTER than oil for water-cooled engines that operate with far more stable stresses. It's possible that you may have fouled the plug, but---as others have noted---it's far more likely that you need to do a fuel system tune-up. Please note that involves far more than just a carb kit! I start with the gas cap and check to see if the fuel tank vent is free and clear of obstructions, check the tank for trash, corrosion or foriegn matter. If the fuel outlet has a filter on it then I make sure it isn't stopped up. And so far I've only covered the tank! I check the rest of the system all the way to the reed valves that admit the fuel charge into the crankcase in a similar manner. Every component must be clean and functioning as intended for it to work properly.
The same level of care applies to the ignition system!

Re: Possibly the stupidest question ever asked

If its a tecumsah i had a simular problem with a 5 hp tecumsah carb. i took the carb off several times and discovered a little orange rubber like plug in the very back of the carb and it had a slight split in it. I have no idea what its called but went to the local lawn and garden scenter and they had one. Replaced it and its run great ever since. I could barely see the split so you may have to squeeze it to see it
