You are thinking back-azzwords..

The "floating" action of the float translates into lifting motion, pushing the needle to the seat, closing it. Increasing the float drop will cause the needle seat to close sooner. For a reference only with the carb top plate turned over (and the needle seated) the float should be parallel to the bottom fo the carb top plats. This is generally close enough to get you going.
