Going to look at a boat this sunday that I am thinking about purchasing. It is an Albemarle 242 Express. The boat is basically a restore job. I know little about stern drives but I do understand engines. I know that this engine is very similar to the one in my truck but would like some tips on things to ask about to get a feeling as to whether or not this gentleman has some knowledge about the work he has done. below is what he says about engine in a forum covering the rebuild.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ENGINE POWER

Found a brand new 5.7 Vortec GM based motor for a steal. The owner was going to repower his boat but gave up and basically gave the new motor away. The motor was complete with oil pan, valve covers, intake manifold and carb as well as GM HEI distributor and wires.
It almost felt too easy as the motor was ready to go.
Installed a new raw water pump, went with a stainless thermostat housing for a mercruiser which allowed the use of a 1" hose to the manifolds allowing brass drains to be installed on the exhaust manifolds.

Rebuilt the starter and alternator and went through and replaced all the wiring connection with heat shrink connections.

Ran the motor on the ground first to make sure everything was working correctly. The motor had the cutout and cam for a manual fuel pump and went that route.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He did perform a ten hour break in. Changed oil. Spent 10 more hours on lake. He set all timing himself and has been offshore twice.

I believe it has a brand new outdrive but will have to confirm.

Thanks.

Ayuh,.... What Outdrive,..?? it sounds like he knows his way 'round a motor,...

Look at the distributor, if it has a vacuum advance, it's automotive, 'n needs replacin',...

Check the fuel pump and lines are correct also for the same reason Bondo posted. It needs to have marine parts and not auto parts.

I am Not sure what stern drive is on there. Will not know until Sunday. He did change all fuel lines to marine grade.thanks for the input. Just want to be smart about this.

Ayuh,.... I'd worry more 'bout what drive it is, rather than how the motor was installed,...

it is an 89 model albemarle. it has a DPA outdrive. i did go see the boat. it is fully marinized. it wasn't the first time this guy has done this. he also has a mechanic that helps him with everything. can't vouch for the mechanic but it at least sounds better than him just doing all this by himself.

Albemarle boats have a very loyal following. Have you searched for any Albemarle owner or club type sites?
