Poulan chainsaw problem

Ok, here's the skinny...<br /><br />My aunt/uncle had the chainsaw that was my grandparents. The thing sat around for about 2 years(maybe more), with gas in it. I need to use the thing, so I borrow it from them.<br /><br />Obviously, it doesn't want to start right away. I pull the starter, eventually getting it to pop. Only about 1/2 tank of gas, so I get some new stuff and fill it up. Get it to pop, then start on the new gas.<br /><br />Runs ok now, until about 30 minutes into a job. Then it wants to croak when I try to use it, and give it gas. I can get it to fire back up(sometimes have to use the choke), but it will start and run for a bit. Give it some throttle again, and eventually starts to die.<br /><br />Any ideas? I plan to clean out the air filter, and replace the fuel filter. All the old gas is gone by now. And I've been using premium gas, in the hopes of cleaning out the crud, and not having to rebuild/clean the carb.

I will bet the carb is full of garbage and the filter could be clogged. The "old" gas probably left residue in the tank and ofter running for a time the crud is breaking up and going through the engine. Most of the chainsaw problems are carb related and on occasion they are lubrication related (not proper fuel mix). The diaphrams in the carb are tiny. I would do do the carb cleaning and rebuild. The parts are pretty cheap.

Ayuh,....... I Think Bob is Right,........<br /><br />And,.... I've got My Dad's old Pull-On chainsaw,......<br />It needed the Same work, after sitting 15 or more Years........<br />And,... It's Still a Pull-On......

Are the rebuild kits picked up at a hardware store then?

I got a carb kit for around $4 I think. I had to get it from a shop that does small engine repair. My Lowes/Home Depot didn't have the kit.<br /><br />It is an easy repair.

I think you will have to find a dealer for parts there are to many different ones to be a hardware store item<br /><br /><br />tommays

You didnt say anything about mixing oil in the new fuel, you did mix oil in the fuel didnt you?????????????

Poooo-lan, huh?<br /><br />I have gotten mine to run after sitting a couple of years by removing the jet needles and blowing air through them into the carb throat. Be sure to resposition the needles exactly where they were before you started.<br /><br />Fresh 40:1 mix (chainsaw oil) and VROOOOM!!<br /><br />Might not work always, but it's free.

I have a Pulan That calls itself WildThing, it drips oil like crazy unless it is laid on its side, but it never fails to start on the second or third pull, even if it has been idle for six months, i mix 40:1, but before i add the oil i make sure that the gas is treated with stabil or seafoam.

Yes, yes I did. As per the directions that are directly on the saw. <br /><br />And apparently Poulan isn't so supportive of 10 year old saws. The manual was a pain to find online, and when I called them up to ask them about the manual(parts and users), they said that they(Poulan) doesn't keep the older ones online.<br /><br />Also, the local True Value said they didn't see a rebuild kit for the carb. They showed a carb mounting gasket, but that was as close as they could get. So I guess I have to rip it apart, and see what's up first.

Can you post the name and number on the carb? It is probably either WB or TC. I have cross references for these carbs to find carb kits.
