Are there universal steering mechanism for steering outboards. This one works like a speedometer cable. The wheel spins but the motor just laughs at you. Need a new windshield, or what ever you salts call them, too

Re: Power Cat Steering stuck

Hi Techno,
Might want to check out powercatboat.com/ for parts for the boat itself.
As for the steering - is it a rack & pinion style? Personally, if it were mine I'd install a new Teleflex rack & pinion or rotary depending on your space limitations on the dash. Having had an old steering cable come apart on me at speed, having a new one is good peace of mind...

- Scott

Well thank you walker. Yes I have been to http://www.powrecatboat.com others might want to visit their for a little history on the Power Cat that originated in Bellflower CA. Yes, I believe this is what you call a rack and pinion and that part works ok after you disable the cable (hey look at me I'm a poet) Thanks for helping me with "myoutboards" and not slinging unwaranted insults because of the way I ask questions. Niceness cannot be forced.

Like Chinewalker says, Teleflex is usually a very good choice. If the entire steering system is old you may want to replace it all to make sure it all works perfectly. Trying to match up old and new systems can be a pain. Plus, it often happens that more is broken than what you think. With these steering systems, sometimes one broken part leads to another broken part. If you only replace one broken part you get another broken part - again!

Thanks Bayman, we have it torn down now and it looks as though the problem was on of disuse rather than wear. Looking at the options, new cable is 120, any idea what a complete unit is going to run?

Can anyone describe or post a picture of the teleflex steering system so I will know what I have? The mechanism itself looks to be in good shape. The cable was froze at the motor end.

Sent to OUtdrives.com: OK, here is your chance. I have recently acquired and old Power Cat 14 Foot
Tri-Hull. It has a 700E inline six engine. I am not sure what Steering
Mechanism it has but the cable matches the one in the Mercury Service
Manual. Because the boat was left setting for many years the cable froze up
at the stern end. I have been shopping for a replacement and have
encountered several different opinions as to the interchangeability of
cables, eg universal and standard. May I have your thoughts on this matter?
Ray Chrispens
25398 Avenue 92
Terra Bella, CA 93270
Voice 559 535 5369
http://www.outrageous.net/~backspacer
I have the part number for a complete unit from Teleflex, but can't seem make a match thru their distributor network. From my connversation with the Teleflex Rep it sounds as though back in the ancient days Some Boat manufactures contracted specific to teleflex and some used other suppliers. What are the thoughts of this group?
