I have an old johnson 35hp outboard, manual start, and was wondering if it is possible to get power from the stator and use it to charge a battery or power some nav lights so I can use it at night or run some electrical instruments off it.

Hi Cheeks
We would need an old mod# for your old johnson to tell you for sure. But I doubt the motor has a charging system.

The older Johnson 35's had a generator that was an accessary. Most did have them but the generators are still out there. I have one on my 1958 Johnson 35.

Far simpler to have two batteries and keep one charged up for the accessories. They make solar trickle chargers that do a decent job of keeping a battery up. This is of course assuming you have a really old 35. You didn't provide a model number, so we don't know if yours is a 1950s vintage 35 or a 1970s/80s 35. The later series have electronic ignition and have a provision for adding an under-the-flywheel charging system...
- Scott

The model # is 35RL76G I think it is about 20 years old but not sure. this one does not seem to have any fancy electronic ignition but I did get given another motor which looks the same to use for parts and this seems to have some extra wiring and a sealed metal electronic component with four wires that come out, these wires head towards the plugs. Cheers.

Hi cheeks

You have a 1976 35 HP which was the first 35HP with the bigger displacement. Usually this model has a sticker on intake silences with this information. Most if not all of these have generators for light and accessories. Check if there are three yellow wires going from statorplate to a little terminal row on starboard side of motor looking from back. If there is, it has a generator for light and acc. A rectifier can be added ( if not already ) and you can charge a battery. The whole CD ignition system from the other motor will bolt on, if you like to upgrade it. Just swap the whole stator, CD powerpack, ignition coils and harness - no problem. The CD ignition is far better.

Yes the back up motor does have three yellow wires, but the current one doesn't. I think the plug has been cut off for the power but the wires are still there. Is there any way to test the gear on the backup motor before I change them over? I have a multimeter but not really any other electrical testing gear. Is it a complicated task to change them over or quite simple? Greatly appreciate your info.

Hi again Cheeks

The easyest way to test ignition will simply be pulling cord and see if it sparks on both plugs.

It is not a difficult task to swap stators and the rest, but you will need a flywheel puller - balanced puller type, if you use a brake drum puller or equiv. you risk to ruin the flywheel - force must be on the three threaded holes. Why not try to run yours and mesure on the three yellow wires to ground if you get current. Rectifier is probably shot anyway, as it isnt´ happy with running without connected to battery.
