I have a scored cylinder on my starboard 1996 200 Oceanrunner. The boat is a 1983 26 ft Bertram, outboard model.

I can't afford to repower.

Anyone out there think it is worthwhile to rebuild it? I have been reading posts about how these motors are bulletproof etc. That has not been my experience. Have any of you guys had to rebuild a similar motor?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks

First thing to do is get an OEM Factory Service Manual, read it and then get back to us here with questions. Yes, they can be rebuilt by the DIY'er.

Boobie, I am no mechanic, that gene was not passed on to me by my Dad. Is it worth fixing a motor this old for $5-6K or save for new ones?

That all depends on what kind of shape the rest of the mtr is in.

iBoats sells rebuilt powerheads for a good price. You would still need to clean and set all carbs, install and synch the ign system and mount the powerhead (not in that order).
