Power head off- Tstats and water pump?

With lot's of help from guy's on this forum I got the powerhead off of my 1981 90HP Johnson. Sent it off and expect my fully dressed one in a week or so. Now I've been reading posts all along(like a junky on this site). Sounds like I should replace TSTATs and look into my impeller or whole water pump assembly. How hard is it to drop the lower unit? Are there tricks for not hosing up the shift linkage/adjustment? What's a bubble back? Any part numbers would be helpful.<br />Thanks<br />10,000 lakes and no boat!

Just make sure when you put the leg back together, the water pipes and exhaust pipes line up correctly. I made the mistake of turning the leg side to side to get the leg back on and I ended up bending the copper water pipe. I managed to straighten it out after I hooked everything back up and no water came out of the p hole. <br />That is about the only trick is getting the pipes lined up. Well, actually the linkage bolt was a little tricky, but patience will get you through when you have to loosen or tighten the bolt. Just take your time when you do it. <br />Don't know what a bubbleback is though.<br />Good luck. <br />Cheers, Bro Chris...

Sounds like a good idea jman.....replaceing the stats and water pump along with a new block is sound advice.<br /><br />The shift rod should already be disconnected. Remove 8 bolts from the lower unit. Six above the anti-cav plate, one just forward of the trim tab and one under the trim tab. The lower unit should slide right off. DON'T turn the shift rod. Leave it be. It's already set at the correct height.<br /><br />T-stats PN 434841 (2)<br />T-stat cover gaskets PN 332369 (2)<br />Bypass valve seats PN 321692 (2)<br />If the by pass valves aren't melted down, they should be good to go.<br /><br />Water pump kit with housing PN 5001594<br /><br />Bubble back refers to the outter exhaust cover used on the 140s' of that year. Yours should be a flat back.<br /><br />Good luck and keep us posted as to your progress.
