will a 72 johnson 50hp power head bolt on a 80 johnson 50hp,is the drive shaft spline spline count the same, both years use the same power head gasket! so I'm guessing the bolt pattern is the same!

Re: Power head swap

go to boats . net and look up the schematics and #'s for both. I assume if the powerhead base gaskets and the drive shafts have the same part numbers between the years, it should work.

Re: Power head swap

Should work. The early 2 cyl blocks have a curved base on one side. Later ones were straight on both sides. The base gasket is the same, it's made so it'll cover either block and either adaptor plate. If you use a straight block on a curved adaptor you can weld a small aluminum piece in so it covers the curved adaptor.

Re: Power head swap

If I remember correctly the crankshaft splines and diameter are different...... the 1972 uses a big housing like the v-4 and the 1980 uses the "nitro" gearcase plus it wont have the mounting bosses/threaded holes for the shifter linkage dure to it being a electric shift....
