my boat for some reason just got smoked by a 19 foot exact engine deep hull boat with 4 people on it... i pulled up next to him and asked what volvo motor he has in there, and its the same... i have the same prop as him as well!!!! his boat tops at 40 mph and gets there mighty quickly...

timing belt is perfect... but timing might be off at wot, and the carb might need redoing again... but is there anything i can look at ???

im stumped!! it was so much faster than mine that i might as well been paddling...

history :

all maintenance done, pertronix ignition and coil...

I'd start by rechecking the timing, at idle and check that it's advancing properly. I'd also do a compression test.

Re: power issue??

Does your boat have trim(275's usually don't)?Or trim tabs?Learn how to take off with the tabs. The drive might be at a different angle.
Same prop or same pitch?Volvo's work best with Volvo props.Aftermarket props work, just not as good.Post a pic of your prop.
My neighbor had a 22 ft.with the same motor as yours. He call and said he was having trouble with performance.I went and checked EVERYTHIING twice.Could find nothing wrong.
Then I noticed the prop was new.I asked when did the trouble start. He says when the new prop went on it started.
Switched props and it was fixed. Not saying that's the problem but were just guessing anyway.J

Re: power issue??

well just checked, its a stock volvo 14x17 LH, its a 17 foot boat so its not that big nor heavy... i was able to go out today in the ocean and ride on a same boat with a 90 hp outboard, and it seemed like my boat was a stock vw bug... the only thing i can think of is the advance, it worked when i rebuilt the distributor... ill have to rebuild the carb again and play with the timing at wot...

no trim on this badboy, but i can screw with the trim in forward only... no trim tabs, they are too expensive for this dinky little boat..

the other boat had the same prop same pitch...

my boat goes 5100 rpm at full throttle... so its not a mechanical timing issue... i had that problem before, it was really really bad..

Perhaps your hull is retaining water and is heavily waterlogged?

Re: power issue??

Did this come on all of a sudden or did you only notice when the other boat went faster?

My AQ125 was down on power, with enough people on it it REALLY suffered. Compression tested well enough on all cylinders, but it was still worn out. Had lots of blowby. Rebuilt it and it runs alot stronger now.

Just sayin, those old volvos can still run fairly well being heavily worn. (rings I mean)

Any idea how many hours are on it?

Re: power issue??

nope never known what full power on this boat was, got it with the timing belt as it was... engine has 180-185 compression all 4, and did a leak down test and it was perfect...

from what i was told, it had been a church boat that someone donated, they said they stopped using it after 3-4 years due to a slipped timing belt, so it sat for years, and i totally redid everything except rebuild the motor.. this motor is stout, runs like a brand new car, idles perfect, dosnt eat oil, dosnt leak, volvo said the outboard looks like it might have 100-200 hours on it... so im out of ideas, was thinking dwell but its electronic ignition... maybe bad coil??? even though its new, try a new one?? i dont know lol..

Re: power issue??

Did you check your actual speed? GPS preferably? I checked a Prop calc and according to that, 5100 rpm, 17" pitch, 2.15 gear ratio, 6% slip, you should be going about 35-36 mph. thats not too bad...

Have you tried adjusting the trim angle of the outdrive. There are the three different positions for that. I've played with mine and find they have a large effect on my boats performance.

nope, max 28.2 GPS lowrance... takes literally 45 seconds and lots of steering back and forth to get it on plane...

which position is yours at???

Mine works best in the middle position. It's the best balance between hole shot and top end. In the hole closest to the transom, I get a better hole shot but it tends to push the nose of the boat down and plow at high speed. The outermost hole gives a little more bow rise at the hole shot and at speed speed but may cause porpoising in certain hulls.

Basically, experiment with the different positions of the drive and see what each position of the drive does for your boat and how you load it.

For the over steering it's normal.Trim tabs will help.Post a pic of the prop. The wrong one will do that.J
