Ayuh,.....

If you consider 130/ 140hp, Enough......

Personally,.... I think boats rarely have Enough Horsepower......

My uncle has a '95 Searay 175 with a 3.0 that he's had since new. It's been used hard and primarily for watersports. It's plenty powerful.

Re: power of 3.0

I run the same motor setup on my I/O.
The holeshot is pretty good (Could be better, have a few dings my prop).
Top speed is around 32 - 36 MPH (Again, reduced due to prop) at WOT.

I pull tubes, kneeboards, wakeboards, and skiis with no problem.

Re: power of 3.0

I just bought the same boat a couple of weeks ago. I had the same question
about being under powered, but after test ride, with 4 adults and a WOT of 42MPH -GPS, I jumped on it. Had it out last weekend and preformed great, plenty of power, for any of our water sports

Re: power of 3.0

I have a 97 same set up 108 hours on it. I love the boat, plenty of power depending on who is on board. I few issues, I did not realize how many friends were interested in boating ( or dont want to buy a boat but want to go boating). room is an issue. the other thing I did was add a hydrofoil, huge difference in getting to plane. with a larger load. I love mine, easy to run, load, unload, handle, clean ect. rough water can get tricky but a great boat.

Looking at selling mine after 8 months. wasnt sure if I would like boating and fell in love hook line and sinker. I want to upgrade to bigger, too many cheap friends I guess. lol What type of price and hours on the 1 your looking at.

Re: power of 3.0

I empathise with you and can tell you that I shopped for two seasons and was tempted by the much cheaper pricing on boats with the 3.0 versus a 6 or an 8 cylinder. I am sure the 4 cylinder will be just fine for a while. If you are like most folks I know, that 3.0 seems to get slower as the kids get older and you generally just want more power. The same reason I moved from a naturally aspirated car to a supercharged model. The naturally aspirated car was just fine but at times I want the extra torque. At the end of the day the minimum engine I would consider was a 4.3MPI in an 18 foot or so boat. I then discovered that the MPI option is extremely hard to find/almost non existant in the local used market and had to settle for the carb version. If I were you, considering the economy, I would move right to the v6 and skip the entry level engine. For just a little more money you can save the upgrade hassle in the future.

Re: power of 3.0

Not sure about the wieght on your sea ray, but the 3.0 i have in my caravelle 176 does great! hull design and weight make a big difference in the answers to your question but the see ray has a similiar hull and my boat is 2100 plus fuel and passengers, and with the five of us ( kids at 75 each and adults 150-200) plus a full tank (around 200) fully loaded comes to around 28 to 3200 and i get a top speed of 40 mph with stock aluminium prop thats seen a little abuse , plus only use around 8 to 10 gallon a day tubing, skiing, and wakeboarding. with the stock 21p prop hole shot isnt awesome but could be worse and can also be fixed with lower pitch prop.

Re: power of 3.0

My friend has a 1985 wellcraft 19 footer, the 3.0 has plenty of power for him. Gets on plane just fine & runs about 40-42 MPH. He thought it would be under powered until he got it in the water. I think it's plenty good for your average 19 foot boat.

His last boat had a chevy 350 & was a 22 foot cuddy cabin, It ran about 52-55 MPH. Just for a comparison.

The 3.0 is a very basic, easy to work on 4 banger.

Re: power of 3.0

I have the Sea Ray 176 with the 3.0 and it does fine for me. I've had a fully loaded boat with a mix of kids and adults and it planes with no problem and tows tubes too. I'd plan on putting Smart Tabs on if you get it. They made a big difference on my set up.

Please notice that its been over 7yrs since this topic had any posts.

Asking DR about your boat in Kens topic is considered a hijack

Start a topic about YOUR SeaRay 176 and the change to a 4 blade prop, per the help tip at the top of the forum page.

Thanks
