Power pack or stator???

Hey guys, motor is a 98 johnson 150, I got the fuel restriction issue all taken care of I had. Rebuilt all 6 carbs and ran new fuel lines and filters. Now I think im having a stator or powerpack issue. When i was out fishing and shut the motor down to fish it took a few tries to get the motor fired back up when it was cold. It would start then die when I gave it gas. Let it warm up a little and if i feathered the throttle it would catch and run great. Now everytime i try to start the boat after a day of taking it out It doesnt want to fire up. Usually when I change the plugs and try it fires right up. It was funny, I was checking the 7/16'' gap for the spark and as soon as i did this and grounded the tester the boat fired right up. Today I tried starting it on muffs and it wouldnt fire up. It sounded like it wasnt spinning as fast. Does this sound like a stator or powerpack?? I can get a good deal on both a stator coils and powerpack so i am tempted to change out all of them and see what i get. Compression is 94-95 in all cylinders. And im getting fuel.

Yes ,----If you get a good deal you might change them.----If that is not the issue you will have some good spares for next time !!

agreed! i am leaning toward coil pack/coils or bad ground because when i had the gap tester hooked up to the coil and grounded it to the motor and had my buddy turn the key to test the gap the boat fired right up.

Make sure the coil bolts are TIGHT.

Well----1/4-20 NC are 60 inch lbs.

coils are not supposed to be any tighter than 84 in/lbs. crank them tight, and sit back and wait for the inevitable crack to appear

have you tried cleaning up all electrical junctions points like connectors, , ground posts, wire ends etc... cost 0$

Make sure they are tight enough to keep them from arching to he mounting bolt. Anything other that loose is should be fine.

i got out there to tinker with it today. I took the powerpacks out inspected them and reinstalled them. Put the 7/16'' gap tester on the first plug wire. hit the trigger ignition and the boat fired right up. I didn't prime it didn't touch anything just hit the ignition. Yes i had the water on just in case. But i put it all back together. Got in the boat and fired it up and it cranked right over. Maybe there was a bad connection somewhere i fixed when i took it all apart and reassembled it? not sure what i did but it works?

I also put the multimeter on the ignition coils and got a reading of 279 or 280 on all 3. Not sure if that tells us anything.

thats the plan gonna take it out fishing Thursday. and stay close enough to the ramp i can putt back! or at least within seatow range! lol

Another question, does anybody know what amp circuit my motor is? Im guessing 35amp but im not sure. Its a 98 johnson 150 ocean runner.

lots of models 150 1998 but harness fuse says 20 amps on one diagram
carry a few spares don't you ?

The spare on the harness says 20amp. However I was curous what amp the system is because in my manual it shows different ohm tolerances for different amp circuits.

It was in reference to the tolerances when testing the coils on the stator. I cant remember now i believe it was 6 amp, 9 amp or 36 as the options?

the ocean runners were all 35 amp if i'm not mistaken... v4 loopers too
