I have a 1987 Evinrude 6 hp MDL# E6SLCUD and a 1987 Johnson 8 Hp MDL# J8RCUD

The 8 was not running well so I swapped the power paks and now it runs great. I checked with the jonny/rude dealer and found they both use power paks with different part numbers and different prices.

The 6 has a rectifier to charge the batt, the 8 does not and I thought that one system had nothing to do with the other

What is the diffenerce in power paks, they look identical except the numbers are a little different???

Re: Power Pak Question

You're right. The powerpacks have nothing to do with the rectifier. The rectifier is in the charging circuit, powerpacks are ignition stuff.

c/6
Hooty

Re: Power Pak Question

Bill... I also checked the OMC part numbers of the packs and found that there was no cross reference of the two in the price book or elsewhere, and the price difference was about $6.00 or so.

The 6hp powerpack part number is 582285.

The 8hp powerpack part number is 583174.

I'd suggest you purchase the proper pack rather than take a chance on the unknown.

I have found in the past that various engines had similar powerpacks, which I knew for a fact would interchange and operate perfectly, however no interchange was mentioned anywhere... and there was a price difference between the various packs.

In checking farther, I found that the only difference between the powerpacks I speak of was that a change in the length of wiring at some point, or a slightly different connector, otherwise the packs were identical.

If any of the wires were different lengths, the part number would be different, and of course so would the price.

Re: Power Pak Question

I cross referenced the two part numbers that Joe Reeves gave with my vendor's list and their prices are about the same difference ($6.) for the different units: web page

Re: Power Pak Question

NAPA (Sierra) sez their powerpack nr. 18-5758 works on everything from a 4hp. to a 40hp. and a few 50 & 55hp. engines.

c/6
Hooty

Hooty

That's what I found, too. It may just be the wire length that Joe mentioned and that is the only difference.

Re: Power Pak Question

Thanks for all the information. I will check the wire length.

Is there any checks I can make on the power pak using an ohmmeter, the manual I have gave very little info except to renew if it is defective.

Re: Power Pak Question

The one pack has a rev limiter, the other one doesnt. Thats what the 62L means. The limiter is at 6200 rpm.

Re: Power Pak Question

I think I understand the power pak is the same for both engines the diff is one has a rev limiter the other does not...

How do you test a Power pak to make sure it is functioning properly???
