ive got a 75 evinrude 50 50573b with a Power pilot control box. No issues with the box’s normal function. But I noticed today (when I finally had my first chance for sustained WOT) than if I put it down i’ll Get about 5400 but it will back itself off quickly to about 4000 and then slow creep down to 3500.

my “tension screw” doesn’t seem to have any effect (so I’ll open up and make sure it’s set). Where should I be looking for a fix?

thank you as always.

If you haven't opened it up yet, it's just a simple strip of metal with a piece of friction material bonded to it, kind of like a brake band.

Had it open a few times before - but never looked at the friction adjustment portion before. Is that the likely cause of it backing off?

depends on what "it" is backing off. If the control lever is slipping (current assumption, apparently), that's one issue. If on the other hand the engine is stumbling or slowing on its own, that requires more investigation.
