My boat displays conflicting information. The manufacturer's literature states horsepower is 60hp, and that is what I have. The manufacturer's nameplate shows max 40kw which would be about 53.6hp.

The US Coast Guard capacity rating plate shows 4 persons and 80hp.

Can I use an 80hp motor without fear of insurance issues? Just curious.

Re: Power ratings

We've been around this a lot in this forum. Some insurance companies care and some don't.

But I would think they would give you the benefit of the doubt if the coast guard plate says 80hp. At least you have some documentation.

But you should probably ask you insurance company (and hope you can even find someone who knows what you are talking about!)

Re: Power ratings

Thanks. We've been around the topic of installing an oversize motor, but I could not find or recall an example where one plate says 60HP(40kW) and another says 80HP on the same boat. I was just curious if the USCG plate overrides a manufacturer's plate, as it clearly states 80HP.
