Power Steering Cooler - Winterizing

Volvo Penta 4.3GL.

Just completed all the winterization procedures on my boat including gear oil change, stabilizer for fuel, new filters and engine oil, engine fogging, drained block, manifold and manifold intake, drained hoses to raw water pump and drained hose to circulation pump.

I now plan to fill block with antifreeze through the T-Stat.

The one nagging thing that just keeps bothering me is whether there is something required for the power steering. There is nothing at all mentioned in the manual about a winterization procedure, however I have done a ton of research online about winterization and draining the power steering cooler is something that comes up time and time again.

So do I need to worry about this and if so.............where is it and how do I drain it? My manual doesn't even show it on the diagram's.

Thanks.

Ayuh,.... I donno how Volvo mounts 'em nor where, but unless it's high, 'n pointed downhill, it'll need drainin',...

It's Usually the 1st thing on the in-comin' waterline,...

It may self-drain to yer raw water pump, just donno,...

Oh,.... 'n yer wastin' yer money on that antifreeze,.... Air don't freeze,...

Are you sure you have one? What model/year etc. do you have?

On my vintage of VP DuoProp (1991 570DP) if it had one it would be plumbed into the inbound raw water hose between the drive and the raw water pump. It drains along with the raw water pump when you remove the front cover of the pump, you can also remove the hose at the pump and aim it down to be sure. Mine does not have it but shows in the diagrams.

remove both hoses from the water pump. Hold the water intake high to drain it back thru the drive, and hold the other hose to the lowest possible point. It will siphon any remaining water from the p/s cooler.

Re: Power Steering Cooler - Winterizing

Follow the water inlet hose from your raw water pump back towards the transom. Youll see it connected to a metal pipe which has connections for the power steering fluid hoses. Chances are its right behind the engine, and I believe it is angled down so that it self-drains when you pull those hose off the water pump (my 07 5.0 is that way). Check to see if that's true, and if so, there's nothing special you need to do.

Thanks all...great responses.

I followed the raw water intake back from the raw water pump and I think I found the rascal (see below picture).

So is this the cooler? And if so, it is on a 45 degree angle which goes directly to the raw water pump. Seeing as I removed the hose from the water pump to drain it, the cooler should be good to go as well correct?

Does that smaller hose go to the power steering pump or steering assembly? From your description, it sounds like you found it. And yes it should be good. That's why Volvo mounts in on an angle like that, so that draining the intake hose automatically drains the cooler too.

That's it. I just pull of one end of the raw water pipe and point it down...done.
