We had our steering actuator replaced this season mechanic told us to use ATF to refill and we remove air. Why would I not use PS fluid? I did not have a chance to ask mechanic. So I’m posting here. Thank you in advance.

Many power steering systems run ATF as a fluid. Depending on which marine power steering system we’re talking about it’s an acceptable choice

You can run ISO 32 or 46 hydraulic oil, ATF, UTF, SAE 30, or PS fluid. Pump dont care, actuators don't care.

Volvo has spec'd nearly all of them over the years

Just flush the system between fluids as some of the chemicals in PS fluid don't like some of the additives in other fluids
