Power steering issue

when pulling up to the dock today I had a moment of panic as I had the wheel turned all the way I believe to starboard (can’t remember as panic set in) and the steering bound up and I couldn’t turn the wheel. I gave a little force but no go. I quickly grabbed my boat hook and got a cleat on the dock and was able to get tied up. After I few tries and some muscle I got it to come free. After that it seemed normal again. I looked things over back at the house but nothing jumping out. Any ideas on why it bound up?

Given the power assist is just a hydraulic ram, it's more likely to be something in the helm (more details on the helm please) or the cable.

What details do you need at the helm, being as I have no idea but will certainly find out

Cable or hydraulic? If it's hydraulic, is it balanced cylinder or unbalanced? and what brand. If cable, straight rack and pinion, rotary rack & pinion, again, what brand? (even the colour of the cable will help)

About all I know is it’s cable not hydraulic. Never had to deal with any steering cable problems before with any of the boats I’ve owned so I apologize in advance for lack of knowledge. I know how to post pics and follow troubleshooting advice though!!

That's a straight rack and pinion. Probably a Teleflex (Merc haven't made a straight rack for a VERY long time :upset:)

When was the cable (at the engine end) last greased? I would suspect a cable and/or helm before the power steering on the engine.

within a few feet of both ends of the cable is the teleflex part number (now seastar). it will also have a length. this is handy so you can order the correct replacement.
