Power Steering Leak

I have a Volvo Penta 5.0 Gi, 1998.
I noticed some power steering fluid in the bilge and my pump was almost empty on my last trip out. During a quick look I did not see any leaking fluid on the pump or any easily visable hoses. I plan to refil and run off of the hose on Saturday morning to better ID the locaiton of the leak. I plan to put blue auto paper towels wrapped around the hoses to help ID the leak location. I had a leak several years ago that the dealer could not easily find, it was back behind the engine area.

Q. Any tips on helping to locate the leak?

Re: Power Steering Leak

You need to check at the power steering cooler and the power steering cylinder near the transom too.

Power steering oil cooler. Follow the water hose from the transom shield, should be the first thing it runs into. It also has two hoses going to it from the power steering system.

Re: Power Steering Leak

I had a leak develop on my 1999 5.0. On the starboard side of the engine towards the back there is a high pressure hose and a low pressure hose which run parallel for a bit. At the bottom of the low pressure hose, the hose made an abrupt 180 degree turn and that's were my leak was. The hose had dry rotted a bit.

Good luck

Re: Power Steering Leak

Thanks for all the replies. It is real hard to bend down into the tight area and see behind the engine where the hoses go and the PS ram. I could not see the leak so I decided to bring it in for repairs. Cha Ching $$$ ..... Power steering Ram leaking badly. Unfortunately I also have the seawater pump leaking so I needed a new one of those too. Should have her back solid in a week but allot less money in my wallet. I guess this will be my XMAS present.
