power steering pump options

hi all.

Had the boat out today north of the key Biscayne bay and noticed a burning rubber smell. Shut the engines down and checked to see if it was coming from the boat or the nearby bridge. OPened the hatch and saw the power steering pump was real hot. Looked to have leaked all the oil out. Checked the hoses, they seemed fine. I keep fluids on the boat for emergencies so added some and checked the level. Then all of a sudden it dumped all the fluid out the bottom. I take it this means the pump is bad and needs replaced.

On to my question. I noticed these power steering pumps are around $400. What are my options? Do I have any? Or I have to shell out the $400 for a new one?
motors are 1990 merc 5.7 alpha 1

Auto parts on this one! You just need a gasket set for the can. Typically, it comes with a bunch of o-rings.
Unless the can itself is damaged. Corrosion or somebody pried on it.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The can looks in decent shape. Not corroded or anything. How would I look for the rebuild kit at the auto store? I Usually use a 1990 chevy caprice with the 5.7 for spark plugs and also a starter recently. Can I do the same for the rebuild kit for the PS pump?

Re: power steering pump options

Ok just to post what my resolution was for anyone else with a bad power steering pump. Went to advance auto and searched for 1990 k1500. power steering pump. The guy brought out the whole pump and it looked the same with the exception of the return fitting on the back in the wrong place. ( it would interfere with the mounting bracket on my application) So he suggestion I just buy the pump without the housing and re-use my housing. The pump was $40 bucks took it home cleaned the old housing real good and installed the new pump in my housing. Easy peezy. I was not able to use a seals kit as the pump shaft bearing was gone.

Now my next problem is while examining my lines Both the pressure and the return line were ruptured. Going to a local hose place Monday to have them make some new ones for me. Not spending $200+ for a set of merc hoses

Re: power steering pump options

Took my power steering lines to a local hose shop yesterday. They made me a pair of new hoses for $100 in about 15 minutes.
I thought it was a little steep but still better than $200 + for the merc ones.

I hooked everything up, and it's nice to have power steering on this beast!
