power steering pump question

I have heard that it is possible to rebuild a marine power steering pump using parts from a new automotive one. Is this true? if so does anyone have a link to a good tutorial. I have a 99 merc 5.7

It`s a standard car pump with the res and return hose changed.the manuals have detailed description on the rebuild.

ok, i am a little confused, what I want to do is buy a automotive pump and use the parts from it to rebuild the marine pump. is that possible?

All you need is your res can or it its rusted away, relocate the return hose fitting on the new pump.
