I just bought this boat on ebay, and the power tilt and trim hoses need to be replaced, How difficult is this job? The boat is a 1987 Imperial with a 3.0 mercruiser, I dont have any model or serial numbers yet, I will be picking the boat up in the next week or so. The guy i bought the boat from said the hoses were leaking in the bilge and the only way to tilt the outdrive down was to keep adding power tilt and trim fluid when trimming down. Any thoughts or comments will be appreciated.
Thank you

Re: power tilt and trim hoses

I recently replaced the ones on my Sportcraft. Since you're evidently talking about the ones from the pump down to the manifold block - it isn't a hard job to replace them IF you can access the bottom of the bilge area. I replaced the ones on my boat when I had the engine out recently. It didn't look like something I wanted to do with the engine in place. The actual job is easy like I said - it's the access that may make it difficult.

If you are doing this job,and the engine is in the way,you can drop the manifold outside (underneath)the boat. Not too easy, but doable.Observe the angle of the hoses you are replacing will help.Go easy so you don't snap bolts/studs.

DHP

When you say underneath the boat, do you mean somewhere near the out drive? This is my first sterndrive, I am used to working on outboards.
Also would it be possible to remove the lower unit and use some kind of pump to put antifreeze into the block (being careful to not spill any of course). The boat will be stored at a location about 200 miles south of me and I could pull the motor at a later date this winter, if necessary to do the job.
Thank you

nov
buy a manual you wont be able to repiar things that you cant ID on a 3.0 there should be plenty of room to change the hoses in place

the manual will have photos of all the areas you need to service as well as methods to solve problems step by step like bleeding out the air after you change the hoses

it will also tell you how to winterize it correctly and compleatly

if you look in the FAQ section on this site there is a winter guide or if you use the search at the top it is covered in every way

tommays

I echo the need for a manual. You can always ask here for tips and clarifications, etc. Here is another good site for some practical "how to" information: "How do I...?"

Here is a picture of the manifold - it is on the bottom of the transom assembly - there may or may not be a finned zinc on it which you have to remove to get at it. It is the piece that the inside and outside trim hoses connect to.
Until you get a manual and actually see the boat, all the explanations are going to mean very little, even pictures won't tell the story till you see what you have and where things are actually located.

Re: power tilt and trim hoses

Well, I picked up the boat last saturday, ordered the manual monday, it should be here tommorow, I was looking at the hoses in the bilge and could not reach the end of them, but looking at the picture here, I do have one of those things on the bottom of the outdrive, it has an anode over top of it. My hoses are in also, are there any other parts neeeded, such as seals or gaskets? I will try to get them on there this weekend and will let you know how it turns out.
Thanks again

Ayah.........
There's Going to be Tons of Parts,+ Stuff you're going to Have to Buy......................... :D
Welcome to the World of Boat Ownership...........

Depending on the condition of everything,
You Might want to get 1 of those GLM #21970.... Maybe new Zincs......
The very Least would be the gaskets,+ maybe the bolts shown in the pic...........

Good Luck.......

Re: power tilt and trim hoses

Hello,
Okay, this weekend hoses arrived and were the wrong size, plus the manual (Clymer)showed very little about installing hoses or even the little manifold that is in the picture. I decided to let the dealer handle this job. I was suprised about the manual, the one for my chrysler outboards proved to a little more informative than this one. but then again an outboard is easier to work on.
Thanks for all he help,
Novicetech
