power tilt and trim install

I have purchased a power tilt and trim for my 2002 40 hp merc. The existing remote control has a trim switch but I am having difficulty locating the wires under the cowling. If I buy an aftermarket switch can I wire it to the tilt motor directly or do I need to use a tilt and trim solenoid?

You will need a solinoid for up and one for down
