i have this on my 1980 johnson 140.. a couple times this spring just getting it ready i put it to the top, and it would not go down, motor was running when i used the down button just would stay at the top, play around with the buttons up/down it would eventually go.

how can i check and top up the hydrolic fluid?

The fill and overflo screw is the big one above that curved hydraulic line, to the right of the cobwebs.

Re: power tilt and trim question

I would use what is recommended in your manual. I used power trim and tilt fluid from Walmart, then when I figured it needed new seals, I rebuilt it and used Honda fluid, cause that's what the boat shop down the road had. They say tranny fluid works too. You're milage may vary....
Open up the plug with the motor up and locked and pour in fluid until it comes back out, then hurry and put in the plug. Cyvce it down then back up and check the fluid again. Do that 6 times, or so I hear.
Disclaimer: I'm a newbie and just learning this stuff, but the above is what I did. Beware.
