I have a 1988 Evinrude 70hp. My power tilt is working intermintenly. I am not sure if it is an eletrical problem or a problem with the motor. The motor is pretty rusted.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: power tilt motor

Follow the Blue/Green leads from the tilt motor up into the engine compartment. There will be bullet connectors that you can disconnect them from the main harness. Then use a 12 volt source (Jumper cable, Etc.) across the two wires. One way will make it go up and when you reverse the leads, it should go down. If not, then the motor would be bad. Replacement is pretty easy if your decent with basic wrenches. I bought mine at the link below when it went out..

You may also want to check with your local alternator/starter repair shop, as the motors can be rebuilt for much less than buying new. Although if it is severely water logged and rusted, may not be able to salvage it. Test the motor as stated and let us know what you find. If connecting 12 V direct causes it to function as normal, will have to troubleshoot further.
