Power tilt on high thrust 8hp not working right?

I have a 2001 High thrust 8hp and the power tile acts up. If you whack the tilt motor with your hand it will work. Most times you hit the button and it's dead until you give the tilt motor a smack. Any ideas if this is a quick fix? I have the boat in the water already. It's under warranty for 2 more seasons but I don't want to yank the motor off if it's an easy fix. Any help is apreciated.

Take advantage of that warranty. Water got in the tilt motor and rusted the brush holders. Quit smacking it. It has very brittle magnets that shatter from shock. That's not a warrantable fix.

Re: Power tilt on high thrust 8hp not working right?

Thanks for the reply. Any idea if a Yamaha dealer will come to the dock and what an acceptable charge would be? This motor is pretty heavy and I don't want to pull it of if I don't have to. If it were on the hard it would be easier but I'm out on a floating dock. I'm wondering if I could pull the tilt unit off and bring it to them? that would be the easiest thing. I see a big plug going into the top. Any idea how that comes out?

I guess if I have to pull the motor off I'd throw it in my whaler. I was hoping it would be a simple fix...thanks for the response...

Re: Power tilt on high thrust 8hp not working right?

This will be the last Yamaha I'll buy. I called three dealers here in CT. I expected them to be backed up but this is a quick fix and they are all telling me 3-4 weeks. I got the ok from a guy in the shop at one to pull the tilt assembly of and bring it in. I did and then the owner called me and said they won't warranty it now because I took the part off the engine- go figure.

I pulled it of because it's easy to bench test and see it's broken plus the guy in the shop told me it was ok to do so and now they won't warranty it.

I'm going to bring it to an auto electric shop and will NEVER buy another Yamaha again. The Y.E.S. plan truly SUCKS. Yamaha customer service is about as bad as it gets. I called 2 different numbers on the warranty card and I got the run around.

I'll pay to have it fixed and tell everyone I know not to buy a Yamaha- not that Yamaha could care less.

whoa Mr whaler
you need to find a top notch dealer with MASTER CERTIFIED TECHS
the 5 start techs are useless
yami will help u out just need to talk to the right people
all the dealer has to do is go on-line and apply for a warranty, with 24hrs they will get a yes or no
if a no they call and ask why and fight
sounds like u got some sorry dealers up in CT
just my .02

It really is pretty sad out here. There are very few good dealers- period. I am a regular working guy and all the decent dealers are in Fairfield County and unless you buy a new $70,000 Grady White every year the treat you like dog turd.

All the extra money for the YES and they tell you to pound sand more or less. I have to go pick up the tilt unit tomorrow. I'll bring it to the auto electric guy to see if it's a quick fix. If I have to buy a new $325 electric motor I will and then write a note to Yamaha. I doubt they will do anything but it makes me sick I have to do it this way when I have the extended warranty and the guy told me it was OK to pull the unit off and bring it in.

I never had these problems with my Mercury mostly because it never broke!

I have 3 yamahas and they all run lousey and all are newer than 2001!

thats funny most merc are made by Yamaha
if it is a electric motor no coverage period
if it was the trim then they would say yes
same with merc

I am 100% sure it's something inside the electric motor on the side of the lift cyl. Are you saying that is not covered under the warranty normally?

Re: Power tilt on high thrust 8hp WORKS NOW- no thanks to dealer

Re: Power tilt on high thrust 8hp WORKS NOW- no thanks to dealer

I had enough with the Yamaha delaer. They don't want to know you unless you burp 100 dollar bills. They told me to take the unit off, I did then they told me they couldn't warranty it. Then they bench tested it and they said it was fine (this was the owner in a shirt with a collar) I picked the unit up in the back and the kid told me it was making a " bad noise" when they bench tested it.

I called Yamaha YES and they are useless. They told me to call Yamaha outboard relations. They could care less and told me I had to put the unit on the motor and bring the whole motor in.

I took my lift motor to Barbin Auto Electric in Milford CT and they had it fixed in about 8 minutes. One of the brush springs fell apart and died. It was in several peices. It works fine now.

I own a 225 four stroke, a 70HP 2 stroke, an 8hp high thrust, an F6 4 stroke and a little 100:1 2 stroke. FIVE yamahas worth thousands of $$$ and I replace my engines every 5-6 years. This was the first time I broke something that was under warranty and couldn't use my local repair guy.

I WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER YAMAHA. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS FROM THE DEALERSHIP IN GREENWICH CT ALL THE WAY TO OUTBOARD SUPPOR IN CALIF. They could care less. The fact that they ran me around like this makes me sick. Live and learn.

If you are on the fence to buy an new outboard before you do call Yamaha Outbaord support at 866-894-1626 and tell them you have a problem with your outboard. You will see the runaround they give and buy a Mercury.

Look at your YES warranty card too. It DOES NOT cover compression loss, brushes in your electrical stuff and the like. I have a 35 year old Evinrude and it has the original brushes in the tilt motor. My newer high thrust Yamaha self destructed.

Plain and simple- Yamaha customer service is the worst in the industry. Under warranty and they don't want to know you!
