We have a 70hp, (not sure of year) almost every fishing trip, we have to remove the cover and tap on a small relay in order to get the outboard to go down. It will always go up, but not always down, until we tap lightly on this one particular relay. Is it safe to say that the relay is bad and if I replace it, will my problem will be solved?

Pretty good chance of it being bad. Check for clean and tight connections first.

What exactly is your set-up? Do you have a relay switch running to the tilt motor, or is it a toggle switch, to relay, to motor?

The relay, that I have to tap on is under the motor cover, there are two, right together. I presume that one is to raise an dthe other is to lower. The tilt switch is located on the gasfeed/gearshift handle by the console.

Re: Power Tilt Relay

What I did, after having such a problem, was to remove both relays, and the original tilt switch, replacing it with a relay switch. This does the job of the relays, while eliminating the need for so many splices and conections (which is usually the cause of electrical problems). It just allows you to clean up the connections more easily, which also allows you to find faulty connections. Yah it's a pain to do, but something that needs doing. You can also check to make sure your tilt is working by simply connecting the wires directly to the battery.

Re: Power Tilt Relay

One or other of your relays is going bad. No need to rewire it. Relays have a life but are easy to replace. Both relays are used for both up and down (to switch polarity of the voltage going to the motor - in the relay one contact is normally closed and one normally open). You just need to replace the relays one at a time to figure out which contact is faulty.
