Does a tilt/trim motor actually reverse to switch directions; have Mercury 225, will come up but not down, yet can here motor running when switch in down position. Sounds more like a loud hum than when the motor engages and motor tilts.

The PTT motor runs CW and CCW depending on which way you want to trim the motor.

There are usually two types of PTT motors. One has a ground in the center of the motor winding. That is a 3 wire motor. Power on either of the two outer windings turns the motor CW or CCW. These use solenoids to supply the heavy current to the motor

Newer (say '96 and up) motors have a 2 wire motor. The power is reversed on the wires to change the direction of the motor's running. These use relays to reverse polarity and supply the heavy current to the motor.

Not sure what you mean by motor humming. Did it just start doing that, or did you do some work on the electronics?

I do not know how to explain the noise, but will try. I have 2 225hp mercury motors, the other that tilt/trim is working sounds kinda loud when engaged up or down, actually sounds like a motor engaged in gears, I know, terrible description. On the one with the problem, it engages, sounds the same when going up, but when button is pressed down the motor sounds like it is running, but never engaging, to lower engine
