Power to starter stuck on?

'82 40hp Merc with Quicksilver controller.
After starting the engine up about 20 times throughout the day the power to the starter got stuck on. Even with the key pulled out. We quickly disconnected the neg battery cable to power it down. Ended up starting the engine by just touching the cable to the battery and then removing on startup.

Any thoughts on what could be wrong or where to look?

Thanks, Dave

You probably need a new starter solenoid. Or you need a new ignition switch. Disconnect the small wires on the solenoid. If the motor still cranks, it's the solenoid.

Re: Power to starter stuck on?

Thanks WillyB - Before I read your reply I pulled the solenoid to see if it may have been stuck. Couldn't really tell, it seemed to be moving OK so I put it back on. Starting system seemed to be working OK after that so maybe it was the problem. I think I will replace it for insurance and peace of mind.
