Power to weight

I'm just wondering if anyone has seen any figures or graphs in print about how much the weight per hp has gone down over the years, or if it has trended down to some time and stopped/slowed. I'm thinking of replacing an old '72 Ev. 50hp with a newer one and looking for the most hp I can afford but not exceed the old 50's weight. Anyone got some info on this please, I'd appreciate it.

Just get any newer 2 stroke and it should have 50 hp at the prop as compared to your older one which had 50 at the head. You will be amazed..... I do believe Merc's are the lightest.

Its not only the weight of a more powerfull motor to be concerned about it is the tourqing force of that more powerfull motor on your transom, yess you could just not run it wot from the hole, but why not just save the weight and money and buy a smaller motor to start with!

NADA lists the weights of the motors. As long as they are two strokes the newer motors may not be much heavier.

I'm not trying to max out the hp. just looking for information, i.e. such as when the hp. ratings change from the power head to propshaft stated by Bob_VT. This is a significant event, two outboards of the same horsepower might be priced about the same but the one after the change would be more desirable compared to the one the year prior to such a change. If a person was unaware of this fact he might choose the wrong one for a less significant reason. I'd like to put on an engine with slightly more power, a little better on gas, and if possible a little lighter, tall order?

What year did hp ratings change anyway?

Ratings changed in 85.I don't think the difference is enough that you could tell without gps to check speed.But if I was looking at 2 motors an 85 or 84 in identical condition I would prefer the 85 but I don't think you can tell the diff.
