I need to remove part of the floor for transom repalcement. What do I use to cut the floor out (without cutting thru the hull)?? Years ago, my father and I replaced the floor, but we used chisels and a hammer to cut out the floor! I know theres a better way.

Thanks for your help.

Once you establish the deck thickness you can use a circular saw but set the blade only to cut the deck and NO deeper. Be careful and you can cut up most of it that way and the rest is with hand tools.

+1...!

They also make a trim saw...which is a smaller (and easier to use) version of a circular saw. Same design, but less bulky and uses a smaller diameter blade. You can get into tighter areas with the trim saw. They come in all brands, and Sears has a rechargeable one for around $70.

Should the cut be made at an angle or is vertical cut oK?

Also, what is the best tool for sanding down fiberglass?

Thanks.

No reason to cut at an angle.

As for sanding fiberglass...what approximate area are you looking at? Belt sanders are fast..but not good for finish work. Power sanders come in several 'flavors'...depending on the scope of the project. I own all three...belt sander, sheet sander, and palm sander.

Well, I will be cutting part of the floor for transom replacement, also to repair damage to the hull ( that I repaired from the outside previously). Also, I replaced floor many years ago, but never did the finish work on the new glass and need to finish that up as well.

Then my bet is that you will need a decent sheet (pad) sander...and a palm sander.

The sheet sander will get you almost done...in the least amount of time, and effort. The palm sander will be the finishing touch...!

Re: Power Tools to Remove Decking

For my removal of a deck and stringer, I used the circluar saw set just at deck material thickness - especially for the larger - in the middle areas. But, around the edges, I used a smaller circular saw blade mounted to an air tool. It's an OPEN BLADE, so you need to be really careful, but the air tool does not have the power of the electric saw - you can go slower and be more precise. I was able to reach really tight places, being careful to not plunge through the hull. Worked great - can send you a photo if you want.

I also used a flexable disc on an electric drill for some heavy duty sanding.

Point is, based on the need, I tried to use the tool that fit best.

It's a dirty job no matter unless you pay to have it done...

Sears has a 4inch circular saw fro 109 that works great and has an adaptor for a shop vac. Used it yesterday to cut my deck out and works great.
