I'll try to explain to my best what is going on. I have a 40hp merc. yr is 2000. One day after fishing my motor would not lift when I pressed the switch. So I start pressing the switch up and down repeatedly. Eventually it lifted up. I take the boat home, charge battery all the way and tried to lift motor. It lifted so great. I thought maybe low battary. That wasnt it. Same thing happend. I take the motor off the boat and buy a brand new tilt and trim motor. Put it on with fully charged battary. Press the dwn switch goes dwn and sounds great. Press up and it goes up with ease. Do it one more time and when going back up it did what my old motor did. Did not go up. So I wait a min. press up again it comes up but befor it did the motor made a dragging noise and hesitated then lifed fine. Why is it doing this? Anyone have any ideas or other parts for me to check? Thanks to everyone for helping.

Re: Power trim and tilt trouble...

Is there more than one trim switch one the boat? Some have one up front, some have one in the rear.

If there is another try it to see if the problem is cured, an intermittent poor contact in the original switch.

If not the switch then it may be an intermittent poor contact in one of the trim relays. The system needs BOTH relays to function, they have both normally closed contacts AND normally open contacts. If either relay has a poor contact the cures is to replace ONE relay, if it works correctly you got the right on, if the problem persists switch the other relay with the one you just removed.
