Power Trim auto activates

I have a 2005 50hp Mercury with about 35 hours on it. Yesterday we went trough some shallow water running with the engine trimmed up quite a bit. (It won't stay up beyond a certain point). This morning I went out to find the power trim motor running unattended and the engine in full up position. As soon as I touched the trim button it quit, whereupon I lowered the unit. I quickly charged the battery to be safe and reinstalled it. As I walked around on the boat it shook it a bit and activated the power trim to raise the engine. It fully raised and refused to shut off until I touched the trim button again. I lowered it once more and it sat perfectly until I reached over and "bounced" it a bit causing the same reaction. Any ideas anyone. I haven't called my favored "Guru" as yet.

Thanks Fellas! I believe it must be a switch or a bad connection. I checked it out today and everything is working perfectly ?@%&? I just hope it holds. If anything further develops I'll let you know. Thanks again.

Naw, it won't. A small spring in the switch, or a small plastic alignment piece in it broke. It will fail again.

If there is only one switch in the trim system (besides the one on the cowl) and this is happening, it can't be anything else. Get it fixed before it does real harm to the trim system. Under warranty the dealer should be delighted that you brought it in for that, rather than trim motor replacement and that.

hope it helps

Most likely its just the relay. The changed from solenoids to relays and they do go bad. Taping the relays should tell you which one is bad.

Re: Power Trim auto activates

im having the same problem, mine is just coming up automatically. i was out tuesday all day and everything was fine until 4pm and then all of a sudden my trim just started to go up and the only way for my to get it to stop running once in the full up position was to go up to the second trim switch by my trolling motor i hit it once and then lowered the unit and everything was fine all the way down for sometimes 30 seconds and sometimes as long a minute or two. and then al of a sudden once again it starts back up. does anyone no what this could be. i pulled it out of the water and the only way to get the trim motor to stop was to un hook the main battery...?????????
