I have a 2003 Mercury 40hp 2-stroke outboard motor on the back of a Bass Tracker Pro Crappie 175. The power trim quit out on the lake and while I was able to manually trim the motor for transport home, when I lifted the motor, power trim fluid shot out of a hole on top of the cylinder housing where it looks like some sort of cap or plug used to be. Once home in the driveway, I removed the drain screw from the power trim motor housing and only a small amount of foamy fluid dripped out - obviously water got in, presumably through that hole. When I cycled the motor up and down by hand 2 or 3 times, a small amount of fluid shot out of the same hole. The service manual makes no mention of this part, and Internet searches are turning up empty. A friend suggested I tap it and put a screw in it. Another one, who works around a lot of heavy logging equipment, suggested I put in a brass plug with pipe dope, without tapping it. I'm thinking I'll try the latter suggestion but was wondering what others thought, or maybe you can explain what this hold and missing "cap/plug" is all about.
