Power Trim Motor or Shaft issues, not sure.

Ok, the trim motor will trim the motor up but as soon as some pressure is put on it either when it is in the water or sitting out under its own weight it will lower. I would like to know what troubleshooting tips I need to take to see if I just have a leaking seal or is the motor bad. If the trim motor was bad would it even rise the unit up? I think I just may be a seal that has went bad. Any help would be great.

Check the "O" rings on your manual release valve. Hopefully thats all it is.

Where would that be located exactly? When I was messing with it the other day I found I guess a bleeder screw becuase when I unscrewed with the motor up it shot the screw out and leaked all the fluid out.

Ok, that is what I took off and I will get a new O-ring but, The rubber piece that is on the out side of the motor where the screw goes is all cracked and old where can I get one of those? Also, since the fluid blew out when I took that screw out how to I refill the unit and what do I use to refill it.

OMC sold a unit for that year with power tilt but not trim, which you might have.........tilt is designed to bleed down under pressure - for example in case you hit the throttle with motor tilted too far up, or in case you encounter an unyielding object (like the ocean floor).

you can find hydraulic tilt/trim fluid at any marine dealer, walmart, BPS, academy, etc.

Ok, I see what you are saying it does tilt up/down. What can I do to find out what is causing my issue? It will go up and down from the switch put when it is up it will slowly go down you can hear like sqeaking. I does not just fall it goes down slow. When you are in the water you can idel and tilt the motor up and then give it gas it will go down fast. How much fluid do I put in and is there a special way I need to put it in? I have hydro fluid I bought for my car jack will it work?

The "tilt" part of tilt/trim should require quite a bit of pressure to bleed it down - it ought to hold up at low power, for running shallow water/stump fields, etc. The "trim" part (if you have it) should pretty much hold it up all the time.

to find the schematic diagram and parts list, go to:

When you get to a "Products" dropdown, select "OB accessories", find your year and tilt/trim unit.

You can look for the manual release valve, and/or get the part number of the rubber part you mentioned, call around to BRP dealers to see if you can locate it.

Also look on the diagram for a fill screw plug or something - that's where the fluid is added. Tilt the motor down, squirt fluid in until it starts running out, raise & lower a couple times, add more if needed.

It use to stay up when I lift it up no matter how fast I was goin and then one day I noticed that I had it up and I looked back a bit later and it was all the way down and we had not moved from our spot.

you need to check for a loss of oil. On the starboard side cylinder (resevoir) there will be a large slotted screw about half way up, that is the fill for the resevoir. Unscrew it, top if up, cycle it a few times, then re fill. If the problem persists, you have a leaking o ring or valve. Let us know the results.
