Re: Power Trim on Merc 115 OB

Ya know, what's the worst that could happen? I screw it up and have to buy a new one? I was going to do that anyway.

Are brushes hard to come by? I mean, how hard would it be to find brushes that would fit this particular motor? Does Merc sell them?

Nah, brushes are pretty much industry standards, like bearings. You get them in a wide variety of sizes. Just take 'em out and take them to an auto electrician as a sample. I'm sure Merc will be able to supply you as well, but the auto electrician will be cheaper.

Hmmmmm. I can't do anything for a couple days, but stay tuned... I think I may tear into it. Again, the worst that can happen is I screw it up and have to buy a new one.

Thanks

All Rrrrrrighty Then. . .

Anyone got a clue as to how to get to this trim motor? I took the 6 bolts off (3 on each side), that secure the whole trim unit, and all I can do is move the unit back and forth about 3 inches or so (no side to side movement, only front to rear). I don't see any way to get this thing off the boat without actually removing one of the engine mounts.

Maybe if I were able to disconnect the center ram from the engine I'd have a bit more room. Not sure how to do that though!

Anyone?

eish! Not me. My trim power pack sits inside the boat. Basically an oil reservoir, with a valve bank and pump with the motor on top. I had to disconnect the hydraulic hoses to bring my trim unit out so I could work on it.

Yeah, my trim unit sits right between the two engine mounts. The shape of everything looks as though I may not be able to remove it without first removing one of the engine mounts.

I'm hoping someone's done this before and can tell me otherwise. If not, I may be just about done working on this myself.

Can anyone help me understand how to disconnect the center ram from the engine?

Thanks Laddies. I noticed the right side transom bracket isn't there. I suspect that's because it needs to be removed in order to remove the trim unit. I'll find out soon enough.

Thanks again

That's correct..... note the large c-clamp in the picture on the right side. You need to support the clamp section when you remove half of the mount.

Hmmm. I see the c-clamp, but not sure what it's supporting. I'm assuming I need to remove the engine, so it isn't that, is it?

OK, I've asked almost enough questions. One last one, I hope.

Does someone have a link to the best manual I can get? The Seloc manuals here only go to '89 (or so it appears).

Everyone's been a great help. Thanks!

I had this happen once with my 1999 150 H.P. OptiMax. Was a 20 amp fuse. Did you check all fuses on the Motor? When I checked owners manual for blown 20 amp fuse the answer was replace fuse? If only it could end up this simple for you. There is a way to release the trim tilt and lift the motor to the up position but it took three of us to do it and I do not remember what we had to loosen. Best Wishes.

Pretty sure it isn't a fuse. I checked the 20amp fuse right there in the engine compartment, and it's OK. Plus, I jumped the power from my starter solenoid (that I know has power) over to the trim wires and. . . nothing.

I think if I get a good manual I can probably make the repair myself. (Emphasis on "think")

Attempting to drive out the cross pin so as to then remove the pivot pin. The cross pin doesn't want to come out. Does it matter which way I drive it? Can't imagine trying to drive it the other way (the engine is in the way) but it isn't budging this way.

Any takers on whether it matters which way to drive out the cross pin? Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Power Trim on Merc 115 OB

Just found out the cross pin does indeed need to be driven out from front to rear (which is NOT the direction I was attempting to drive it). Apparently the engine is not in the way if I use a long enough piece of rod.

Thanks Laddies!

Re: Power Trim on Merc 115 OB

Interesting set of events.

I was not able to remove the cross pin using a long piece of rod. The engine is indeed in the way. At least I wasn't able to do it.

Instead, I decided to slide the right side transom bracket over to the right a couple of inches. That gave me the clearance I needed to remove the trim motor from the pump.

As it turns out, one of the brushes was sticking inside the little spring loaded housing it sits in so it couldn't make contact like it was supposed to. After removing it and sanding on it a little, it now works fine. Turns out that's all that was wrong.

My biggest concern now is: Since that whole unit will be under water, did I get the seals seated properly so as to prevent water from getting in? That would be a bummer, eh?

Hehe! Glad you got it working!
I don't think that unit is submerged. It only gets some splash water.

And to think, you wanted to buy a new motor. *thumbs up*
