I posted a couple weeks ago about a slow and noisy power trim unit on my 1993 Mercury 40 hp Outboard (sn - OD152581). I got around to taking the power trim off the motor and disassembling the motor part of it. The armature checked out fine when I did a continuity test although it could use a clean up on the contact points. However, I did notice that one of the magnets was chipped and there was a hairline crack running across it. Would this cause the power trim to be slow and noisy or would that me more attributed to the armature? Could I clean up the armature and keep using this magnet assembly (a replacement is no longer available from Mercury Parts Express). Or should I bite the bullet and get a new motor?
Secondly I was wondering if there is an easy way to drain all of the fluid currently in the hydraulic portion of the power trim so I can replace it? I figure while I have the unit off might as well change the fluid.
I'm going to try to post a picture of the chipped magnet so you have an idea of what I'm talking about.
Thanks for any help
