Power trim problem

I have a 1979 Bayliner with 140 horse Mercruiser.
I was cruising in the river on Monday and found myself going way to fast into some really big waves. I believe we caught some air and hit pretty hard. The rpms went a little crazy and then back int the water again. I had it trimmed out a bit.
Now the trim won't lift properly. There is a clear hose moving some red fluid with some bubbles in it as i opperate the lift and lower controls. I took the fill screw out and it is low on fluid. I know it needs to be bled, and I have been reading up on the procedure.
What I am wondering if i damaged something because it all worked fine before my wave jumping.
That was scary.

Were you trimming while you were jumping? If so may be air in lines. Just run up and down several times up meaning full tilt and back down (engine off).

Yes. The motor runs, sometimes pushing fluid and sometimes pushing nothing. It goes up part way and then stops, but the motor will keep running.. It just seems like there is a lot of air in the system. Did the "wave jumping" cause this problem?

Just an update. Bled the system as described in the manual and it works good now. I'm just wondering if bouncing it through those waves caused all the fluid to be pushed out. I really learned something this weekend. #1 Don't bounce boat through realy big waves, and #2 How to bleed the trim system. Thanks for imput! Ken
