Re: power trim stuck up :(

I don't have the manual handy(it is up at the cabin) but I remember on my manual for the 40hp merc. for the trim and tilt that if it is up at the full tilt there is a button on the right as looking toward the front, to keep the motor upright while moving. Is this pushed in? Also I believe it says to unscrew the cap for the fluid which is also on the right side(red/orange in color) to verify if full.
Please do yourself a favor and get a manual for your engine... It help's. Being a 1997 you can order a manufactuer's manual from www.mercurymotors.com, Go to the parts express section(you will need serial number) and get it. Once you get it, a complete section on the trim and tilt and all 0other components will help for the majority of question's you may have.
Happy boating.

Re: power trim stuck up :(

had the same problem with 200 hp mariner. To get it down quick there is a manual release valve which looks like a flat head screw near the tilt trim unit through the brackets. Turn the screw very slowly. Be careful if you do this the engine will fall fast. Could be a number of problems. Low fluid, solenoid, battery, trim motor, trim pump or the worse case scenario a new trim/tilt unit (about $1,000.00 brand new from mercury marine) I bought mine rebuilt from Seilers Marine $550.00. Good Luck

Hi scott
You do need a manual.
Take the crowling off, standing behind the motor look for two relays they might be side by side one is for the up trim one is for the down trim switch the relays.
