Power Trim Switch Intermitent Problem

I have a 150 hp XR4

From every Trim switch I get the same response.

When I click the Trim switch UP or Down I will sometimes get NO response. Most of the time the Trim unit will go up or down but 25% of the time I get No response and have to click the switch several times to get a response.

It has never totally failed me but this intermittant problem is annoying and I dont want to have a total failure on the water.

Any suggestions? ser # 0d029350

Have you check the wiring? I had an i/o where the wires where severely corroded and shorting together. This can be in the engine compartment as well as all the way through the transom and upper unit. Sounds like this would cause your problems.

Not a fun project just for a couple wires!

When I tap either of the selonoids it works. It is an intermitant problem. When the Trim doesnt go up or down I just flick the switch a time or two and it will work. Or if I tap the selonoid it will work.

I have totally cleaned all the connections.

Re: Power Trim Switch Intermitent Problem

seems unlikely that both would go bad, but it sounds like the contacts in them are coroded. I have taken starter selenoids apart and there is just a brass washer that comes down on two contacts and completes the cercuit. My starter selenoid was doing the same thing. If you jump across the two posts and it works every time that's probably what it is.

I had a similar problem on my Mercury but I have the single ram system, I don't know if yours is a different setup. I took the motor apart and cleaned the commutator on the armature with some steel wool and the brushes as well. If you don't have a manual make sure you get one because I had to take the entire power trim system off the motor. But once I put it back together, it worked like new!

I checked the selinoids by connecting jumping the two posta and The selonoids worked every time..

Do I have to remove the metal plate that the two selonoids are attatched to in order to clean the selonoid? Or can I just pry open the four metal tabs that hold the selonoind to the selonoid metal backing??
