If it's type I trim chech the oil level and if it's OK use the manual release to get it down, there is a good chance that it just air locked from low fluid.

If the engine is a 75 then it's type I the release valve is the knob on the bottom of the pump, turn it c/clockwise for release.

Re: Power trim & tilt stuck in up position

I just had this problem last week. I tapped the electric pump with a hammer while pressing the button and it kickstarted it. It still gets stuck from time to time but I have only moved the motor a few times since its going to take a while to get all the parts used to moving again.

Re: Power trim & tilt stuck in up position

I just had this problem on my 1996 175 HP with the triple ram style trim system. - trim motor still runs with both up and down buttons, but motor wont move. - I am familiar with the old style merc trims with the hydraulics inboard, amd hoses out to the cylinders on each side of the motor, but this unit looks like the motor is outboard at back under the engine?? Where would I find a manual relase on this puppy to try out ?

You would have better anwsers if you started your own thread, that said look on the starboard mount bracket there is a 1" hole the release valve is the slotted screw thats in there. The o/rings on the valve commonly go bad, so remove the eclip that retains the valve and take it out and check for a bad o/ring.

Thanks for the info. And Yes I guess I should have started a new thread, just thought it was related to this problem that I found in my searches of this site.

One other question. - Would that release valve be above or below the water line? My boat is docked is in about 3 feet of water so hopefully I can get at it from there otherwise I have to find a tow to the launch

Re: Power trim & tilt stuck in up position

Depending on the boat it's pretty much right at the water line.

Right on - Its a 19 foot larson - wide bugger sits pretty shallow, so I'll find something to put in water under under the stern and with a bit of help from my bro I am sure I''ll be able to prop er up a few extra inches to get it out of the water to at least try and release the ram. Then I can drive it out and check those rings.

thanks Much for your help - This is a cool site.

If you are into FTA (free to air) at all I mod at a site that deals with that stuff.
