Hi all boaters. I have a late 70's Merc 1150 outboard. I am having a problem with my OEM Power Trim Kit. I was given some rebuilt rams because I couldn't hold tilt position. (keeps sinking) I have to keep tilting up because pressure is not holding. After reintalling the rebuilt rams, the motor still sinks from full tilt position, slowly. I do have some minor leaky connections where the hydraulic fittings go into the ram..I can't seem to get them to not leak a little. My control knob on the pump itself is turned all the way out, and I filled with 10-30 oil and raised and lowered motor to bleed system (and topped off with oil again) Any sugguestions, as this is getting very disturbing? And I really need that extra tilt to plane. Thanks.

Dom, First of all, you need to bleed the rams following the procedure in the manual. To summerize, remove one ram bleed screw located on the top of the ram. Run pump in down direction until oil comes out and no more bubbles. Reinstall the screw and repeat with the other ram. Now remove the rams from both mounting bolts. Hold the rams so the lower, inside bleed screw is up. Remove the bleed screw and run the pumpin the up direction until there are no more bubbles. Reinstall the screw, and repeat with the other bleed screw. These are not self bleeding like some T/T systems. Also, I have never had trouble with leaks where the hoses join the rams. You need to find out what the issue is. Inspect the rams for stripped threads.

Thirdly, normally you try to plane the boat with the trim all the way down. Since yours leaks down, it should not be a detriment.
