You need to use copper core marine wire. Not graphite core automotive wire. I think NAPA carries some. But your johny-rude dealer will have the whole assembly kit. It consists of a boot, wire and a little sproingy thing at the end that clips on to the plug. There's instructions here someplace on how to put it all together. It's not exactly intuitive until you do it once - then it's plain as day. If the boot and clip are okay on the wires you have you can reuse.

As far as choking the prop goes. I've done that on occasion and it works just fine. The prop will spin on the hub long before any damage will ever be done.

As a bonus, you can find out if your prop is ready to be re-hubbed. I got a nice little "aha" last summer with one such maneuver when I discovered just how worn my prop hub was.

Another bit of advice. Make sure the coil and point wires are neatly tucked out of the way or your flywheel will make short work of them.

you might be able to find a manual on Ebay.
I have a 65' 18 hp and found one for it on ebay.
