1992 40hp Mariner Magnum 4cyl. Trying to decide if it is worth the time and effort to pull the powerhead so that I can replace the exhaust tube that was missing on this motor. Seems it can only be installed from the top down. The task looks straight forward according to the manuals but I was wondering if there are any hidden snags to watch out for. The power head has obviously been removed at sometime in its 12yr life (someone removed the exhaust tube) and the motor has only been run in fresh water so I don't think corrosion should be an issue. The lower unit is already off so I am hoping to be able to lift the top off by hand. Any idea what it weighs ? My guestimate was about 80Ibs. Should I go ahead or leave it alone and run the motor without the exhaust tube ? It ran "fine" all last summer since I bought it and for who knows how long before that ???

Re: Powerhead removal - worth the effort ?

I just took the head off a 6 and it was no trouble. just get all the nuts off and order a gasket for the engine and there may be a small round rubber seal for the water. Remember where the wires go also and if you forget or dont write them down you will have to take some time to find wiring diagrams which is harder.
