Powerhead Sealers and Lubes

I'm going to the dealer today to get the necessary sealers and lubes for my 1963 75hp powerhead rebuild. From reading through the service manual and searching old posts, it looks like I need the following:

Sealer 1000-now Scotch Grip 847
OMC Needle Bearing Grease-not sure what it's called now
TC-W3 Oil for the powerhead ball bearings and caged bearings

Anything else?

Also, should I use the Scotch Grip on the mating surfaces of the crankcase halves or just on the spagetti seal?

Any grease is OK for the needle beaings. It is intended to hold them inplace until you close up the rods or wristpin. Any two cycle oil is Ok to use to lube up the pistons+rings and bores.

The OEM manual for my '59 Fat Fifity V4 called for permatex #1 fast setting, hard drying for the crankcase.

did it specify whether the sealer should be on the mating surfaces or on the spaghetti seal (assuming your engine uses a spagetti seal)?

Really? I know it says that for the antiques, but for motors with spagetti seals it says use Sealer 1000. No longer available, it is replaced by the #847. Use a bit of it to hold the spegetti seals in place then apply to one surface and quickly assemble--tapered dowel pins first, then center main bolts. It dries fast so be ready to go once you begin.

We used Vaseline for holding the needles for years before OMC came out with their "special" grease.

Okay, I don't have Vaseline but I do have auto wheel bearing grease. Any problems using a dab of that?

Also, does anybody know if any non-boating stores carry the #847? None of the boat shops in my area have it. I tried Fastenal here in town. They have a variety of Scotch-Grip adhesives, but not the 847.

Any grease is fine ... it's only there until the first few seconds of running. I've used wheel bearing grease w/o any problems and that stuff is really viscous.

3M 847 is available in some auto parts stores (sold for weather strip adhesive). Very easy to find on-line as well.

I do not remember if my Fatty had a spagetti seal. I just remember the fast dry, hard set requirement for the sealer. Maybe the spec had changed by '63?

Couldn't find Scotch Grip at any of the big box nor the smaller hardware shops here. No luck at Pepboys, Advance Auto, NAPA, Carquest nor Federated Auto. None of the boat shops sell it and from talking with the service guys, most don't even use 847. But, if it is the official replacement for Sealer 1000, I can't see any harm in using it. Fastenal carries it but didn't have it in stock so I'll have order it for later in the week.

BTW FR, do you coat the crankcase mating surface with a thin film of 847 or do you simply run a bead? Do you do this on the "inside" of the spagetti seal or the "outside" of the seal or both?

Go to the auto parts store and look for permatex aerobic gasket maker. It's the same as the as the Scotch.

Typically, I would do that, but, since I'm going this far to do a good job, I might as well stick with the recommended adhesive/sealer.

I'm not F_R, but a very thin coating is the ticket and some inside the groove before laying the spaghetti seal in to hold it during assembly.
