powerhead swap

Hi, My newly recondition 1979 evinrude 35hp ss is to short for my transom. I've purchase a 35hp johnson 1976 model with the hope of swapping powerheads. The part number for the exaust housings are the same on the 76 ls as it is for the 79ls will the 79 powerhead swap to the 76 housing. Any help would be appeciated. This forum has been very helpful with all my past projects. Thanks.....Robert

Just an idea, but have you ever thought about a manual jack plate? I'm in Washington State as well...there not real common up here but the Southern boys seem to use them a lot. From what I've read about them...they work and are beneficial to the motor. Just a thought.
