Well I got it off:

Wish I did use wedges though haha, I got fed up and used a crowbar between the plate and powerhead and levered it in a silly location and bent the adapter on one of the water passages:

. By the looks of things though I should be able to bolt it back up and hopefully no water will leak out.

Thank you so much for all the help everyone. Now I'm going to replace the spaghetti seal and hopefully have no more dramas!!

If you need to add material to the deformed adapter, marine tex is the way to go. Avoid JB Weld. MOST important is the repaired area must be spotless, always end with a couple acetone, or lacquer thinner wipes. Cloth must come away spotless.

Thanks, I'll give the marine tex a shot. The adapter is pretty out of shape haha.

Regarding the powerhead, while I've got it all apart I was thinking of cleaning all the half peeling paint and grease off everything and painting it matt black to make it look new again. How would I go about stripping all the crap off so it's ready for the new paint? The thing is pretty filthy.

There are special cleaning tanks that do this job very well, but I'm sure you don't have one and access to one is about $50.

So...engine cleaners/degreasers work well. Apply, let soak, stiff brush, pressure wash. Dry thoroughly, lightly coat any ferrous surfaces to prevent rust. If you don't have a pressure washer, hand rinsing is fine, but you may need a wire brush for the loose paint.

Normal gloss black is more cleanable than matte black. Semi-gloss is fine. Although we use Urethanes and base coat/clear coat for motors, Krylon Lacquer black will work fine and dries very quickly. You will need to mask off area's that shouldn't be painted. a sharp razor helps to trim masking where needed.

The easiest time to paint is when you have the short block assembled. install your old plugs to avoid masking the plug openings.
