Re: Powering an 18' Super Sport

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm still thinking the 4s 115 can be a good motor for me. Now I just have to find one. I may still end up with a 2s 115 and up. It all depends on what I find. I'm ready to get this beast powered and wet. I'll keep you posted.

No It will go though both tanks 20gal and 17gal in just over an hour. This thing drinks fuel at there best they are said to use 10% of HP an hour in fuel.

I'm confused about that fuel usage. The basic equation using a 200hp is 20 gallons per hour at WOT, which based on your post covers 55 miles(in an hour).

If you WOT your way 10 miles out to fish, then back the same, that should drink about 8 gallons or so. If that engine is drinking 37 gallons to cover 55 miles at WOT, or slower cruise as you say, then I would double check. I know squat about outboard engines. But using WOT as a guide, then that 200 is drinking 1.5 gallons per mile.

New 200hp Optimax engines average 3.5 miles per gallon at WOT, and at a cruise of 4000rpm, a nice 5.0 miles per gallon.

In contrast, a new 115hp 4 stroke uses 10 gallons per hour at WOT for about a 5mpg.

Considering the cost of fuel, if you compared these 200 hp engines, a good estimate is one engine is using 1/3 the fuel of the other. Based on a season of 1000 gallons, one engine costs $3000 in fuel and the other $1000 in fuel to achieve the same results.
